Buzz words. If you’re in the technology business, you’ve heard them all, and you most likely have a love-hate relationship with them. Internet of Things (IOT), virtual reality, wearables and outsourcing – the list of these trending topics could go on and on. But it’s when you start talking about multi tenant data centers (MTDC), I’ve found, that ears in the room start to perk up. If you’re a company that has servers that are sharing raised-floor space, power and cooling with other “tenants”, then you’re in a multi tenant data center. But how well are the benefits of that shared space understood, and more so, how are the benefits of multi-tenancy truly being taken advantage of?
Demand will continue for multi tenant data centers from both cloud providers and enterprises. However, competition is increasing, and it is becoming harder to differentiate on build quality alone.
This need for differentiation is one reason why Digital Realty and CommScope work to carefully understand exactly what services and qualities their clients are looking for. And recognition of this increase in demand helped lead the way for Digital Realty’s recent announcement of a $22 million expansion in Atlanta, a major data center hub. The 250 Williams St. building in Atlanta, also known as the American Cancer Society building, underwent a major expansion in 2012, making it among the largest multi tenant data centers in the Southeast.
“Multi tenant data centers enable enterprises to outsource their IT infrastructure and connect to a wide variety of ISP’s in a secure, dynamic fashion,” according to Vice President of Alliances at Digital Realty, David Robertson. “Multi tenant data centers offer a level of efficiency, redundancy and improved uptime to clients looking for better support for growth.”
MTDCs give enterprises the opportunity to serve clients and end users better. How? A recent article from Datacenter Knowledge notes that enterprises can take advantage of multi tenant data centers to accelerate the pace of their business, while at the same time lowering their total cost of ownership for infrastructure by taking advantage of the following benefits:
- Flexibility
- Reliability
- Reduced latency
- Security
- Savings
